A truly sustainable home is using nature as a role model. In nature there is no waste, all the resources come from passive means and there is no pollution.
Here at Normus Urban Projects every time we build a new home we endeavour to minimise the waste and recycle the maximum building materials possible. We research new products and offer our expertise and recommendations to achieve the highest energy ratings for each and every project. This may involve double glazing, window film, additional floor and ceiling insulation, larger windows, or researching new cost effective products to achieve the optimum outcome in sustainability.
Normus Urban Projects completed a project at Inspire, Noarlunga Centre in collaboration with Housing SA, some 64 homes. The homes at Inspire have been designed using environmentally sustainable principles of ‘passive’ heating and cooling. By concentrating on Passive Design Principles it is possible to maximise the number of days of acceptable levels of thermal comfort without the expense of operating artificial heating and cooling devices. The homes incorporate the effective use of wall and ceiling insulation, coupled with the orientation and positioning of windows in living spaces to achieve improved solar access to Winter sun. In using sustainable, energy efficient design principles we achieved in excess of a 6 star energy rating.
Saving water was a major focus in the project, applying simple measures such as using water efficient tapware and sanitaryware, with the toilet plumbed to a rainwater tank. Drip irrigation systems and water tolerant plants were used in the landscaping with the noticeable absence of lawn areas.
Greensmart is a voluntary program run by the Housing Industry Association (HIA) to promote practical, affordable and durable environmental solutions for residential design and construction. Normus Urban Projects incorporated many of the ideas in Inspire including low voltage oyster lights, roof ventilators, sealing of extraction fans, cent-a-meter energy monitors, low chemical emitting surface paint and externally flued gas cooking appliances.
Normus Urban Projects is extremely proud of Inspire and the partnership with Housing SA to achieve this excellent project recognised as ‘Residential Lifestyle Development’ in 2010 by the HIA.
